Community Health Promotion Development

Aim

To increase dietetic capacity in the community, utilising dietitians expertise to inform and support the Carmarthenshire community in healthy eating through training and development of community workers and or peer educators / volunteers working with people in the community (aged 0-25) on food and nutrition skills.

Methodology

Following fixed term funding from WAG under the food and Fitness scheme a full-time band 6 dietitian and a part-time assisstant practitioner were recruited. Mapping of existing partners / services / projects / resources was undertaken followed by a gap analysis to facilitate education / resource requirements to be identified and planned for. Delivery has taken the form of some locally developed (in partnership) and OCN accredited training and a programme of training is currently underway. A local network of peer educators is to be developed and a supervision network to be established.

Results

Baseline assessment only completed to date. Programme of audit and evaluation planned.

Evaluation

Reflection

This work has facilitated the development of partnerships across health, social care, education and voluntary organisations and has thereby enabled dietetic input into many community initiatives. The work so far has also helped to raise awareness and value of the dietetic service locally and nationally, and is ensuring consistency regarding healthy eating messages across Carmarthenshire.

Further action
