Orthoptic Patient Information Leaflets.

Aim

To improve quality of care to patients by supplying patient information leaflets on various topics.

This equips the patient with written information to enable them to be better informed on various aspects of treatment and surgery.

Research has shown that only a small percentage of verbal information is retained by patients and written information can help to reinforce understanding and compliance .

The author has compiled a number of straightforward information leaflets for patients specific to the procedure that is being carried out either at this hospital or a neighbouring University Trust.

Methodology

Consideration was given to the need for information leaflets.

The available literature on the procedures was researched from other Orthoptic Departments.

The information leaflets were compiled and discussed with the relevant Consultant to ensure everything relevant was included.

Results

5 leaflets have to date been compiled including:

Patching, squint surgery, specific information pre and post operative procedures, adjustable squint surgery and treatment with Botulinum Toxin.

The appropriate information is supplied to the patient at the time of listing so the patient has the opportunity to read through this at home to reinforce what they have also been told.

Evaluation

The patients appear to have a better understanding of what the treatment entails and are better infomed of the whole process

Reflection

An audit would be useful to ensure that patients still have the best understanding of the various procedures and feel best informed.

Further action

These leaflets are currently updated on an annual basis and will be modified according to patient needs in the future.
